social media Internship program
Organization: Women’s Environmental Justice Policy Center (WEJ) – a fiscally sponsored project of Mockingbird Incubator
Location: Remote (United States Only)
Type: Part-time, educational internship
Compensation: Unpaid; must be connected to academic credit or a formal school-sponsored program
Schedule: 10–15 hours per week for approximately 10–12 weeks during an academic term. The schedule is asynchronous and flexible outside of weekly team meetings.
This internship is designed as a learning experience in nonprofit communications and tailored content creation. The Social Media Intern will receive training and close supervision in content creation, basic graphic design, and social media strategy in the context of gender, climate, and environmental justice. The intern will support WEJ’s public education work by developing graphics, topics for campaigns, and media strategy, with supervision from WEJ leadership.
-
The Women’s Environmental Justice Policy Center advances gender and climate justice in the United States by working at the intersection of women’s rights and environmental justice. WEJ focuses on gender-responsive research, public education campaigns, and evidence-based policy recommendations that center women, people of color, Tribal Nations, and other marginalized communities in climate and environmental policy.
-
By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to:
Explain how a mission-driven nonprofit translates complex research and policy topics into accessible educational content for social media.
Develop content ideas and social media topics that align with WEJ’s mission, research themes, and current conversations on gender, climate, and environmental justice.
Apply basic principles of nonprofit social media strategy, including audience awareness, message framing, and editorial calendaring.
Use tools like Canva to create simple, accessible graphics aligned with WEJ’s brand and values.
Draft and revise captions and post copy with guidance on tone, clarity, inclusivity, and accuracy.
Reflect on ethical considerations in digital advocacy, including confidentiality, respectful storytelling, and equity-centered messaging.
-
Under supervision, the Social Media Intern may:
Draft caption options and short-form educational posts based on WEJ’s mission, existing research topics, and public education themes.
Create or adapt simple graphics (e.g., quote cards, statistics slides, explainer posts) using Canva or similar design tools.
Assist with organizing an editorial calendar, including brainstorming post ideas and mapping content to key dates (e.g., Earth Day, International Women’s Day).
Research how comparable nonprofits communicate about gender, climate, and environmental justice issues, and summarize examples for the team.
Observe how basic analytics (reach, engagement, etc.) are used to refine educational strategies, without being responsible for performance targets.
Participate in weekly check-ins with a WEJ supervisor to review draft content, receive feedback, and reflect on progress.
Exit interviews will be conducted at the conclusion of the internship to gain feedback on the program, educational materials, and areas for improvement for both WEJ and the intern.
All work will be reviewed by WEJ leadership before publication. The intern will not be responsible for independently managing WEJ’s social media accounts.
-
